Chicken Momo is a type of steamed filled dumpling, popular across the Himalayan regions of East-South Asia border. Momos are native to Southwest Chinese region of Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, North Indian region of Ladakh, Northeast Indian regions of Sikkim, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, and East Indian region of Darjeeling.

Momos are also known as dim sum. The term momo itself means meat stuffed steamed bun. Traditionally momos are prepared only with meat. But as with any vegetarian variation we make veg momos with vegetable stuffing. So veg momos are basically steamed flour buns with spicy vegetable filling.

Chicken momos recipe is a North Eastern recipe and very popular in Tibet as well. Chicken momos recipe is a delicious and simple momos recipe filled with juicy minced chicken. A street food special found mostly in Darjeeling or Sikkim. The fillings for these momos are quite simple and light. Serve this momos with tomato sauce, Green chili sauce, momos chutney, etc.

Chicken mince flavored with soy sauce, chilies, pepper are stuffed inside a thin flour dough filling and then steamed. Since this recipe is steamed dim sum recipe, it is a healthy high protein recipe with tender chicken.

Momos can be filled with a variety of stuffings, like meat, chicken, paneer, cheese, cauliflower, broccoli, soya, cabbage, etc. It can be served in many ways- steamed, fried tossed in chilli sauce known ass chili momos, tossed in white sauce, etc and they all tastes delicious. Here is the recipe of steamed Chicken momos, if you want you can fry the same steamed momos to make fry chicken momos.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 15-20 minutes

Total Time: 45- 50 minutes

Serve: 4 servings

Ingredients:-

For dough of momos-

  • All purpose flour (or wheat flour) – 2 cups
  • Salt – to taste
  • Baking powder – 1 -1/2 teaspoon

For the filling-

  • Chicken (boiled and minced) – 1 cup
  • Onions (finely chopped) – 1/2 cup
  • Ginger garlic paste – 2 teaspoon
  • Green coriander ( finely chopped) – 1-2 tablespoon
  • Soya sauce – 1/2 tablespoon
  • salt – to taste
  • Green chilies – 1 or 2
  • Black pepper (crushed) – 1 teaspoon

For chutney-

  • Tomatoes – 3 large
  • salt – to taste
  • Red chilies – 5-6
  • Ginger garlic paste – 2 teaspoon
  • Oil – 2 teaspoon
  • Tomato ketchup – 1 tablespoon
  • Soya sauce – 1/2 tablespoon
  • Water – as required

Making dough for momos

1.In a bowl, add refined flour, salt, baking powder and mix the dry ingredients. Then add water gradually and make soft dough from it.

2.Cover the dough with the wet cloth and keep it aside for 20 minutes. Meanwhile prepare stuffing.

1.Take a bowl, add chicken (boiled and minced), onions, ginger garlic paste, salt to the taste, black pepper, coriander, green chilies and soya sauce. Mix all the ingredients well. Keep aside.

1.Take dough and divide it into equal small portions. Shape them into balls and roll them into thin sheets of circular shapes.

2.Take a cutter, and cut small circles from the big circular sheet. Now take a small circle and keep 1 teaspoon of the filling on it, wet its edges by applying water. Bring the edges together to cover the filling, twist carefully to seal the momos. Do same process for all small circles and made momos out of them.

3.While you are making momos , get a steamer and keep it on the flame with some water for boiling. Then arrange the moms on the steamer and steam the, for 15-20 minutes or till the momos are steamed well.

Making chutney

1.Take dry red chilies and boil them in water.

2.Now add tomatoes in the same boiling water. Once tomatoes start peeling its skin and red chilies change their color slightly, remove them from the boiling water and cool it.Remove skin of the tomatoes and chop them into small cubes.

3.Add dry chilies and tomatoes in the blender and make a smooth paste.

4.Heat the saucepan, add oil, then add ginger garlic paste and saute them. Then add tomato chilli paste. Give a nice mix.

5.Then add soya sauce and tomato sauce and mix them. cook for 2-3 minutes and switch off the flame.

6.Let the chutney cool for sometime Then serve it with Chicken momos and enjoy.

Notes-
  • Here I have used all purpose flour (maida), if you want you can use simple flour or atta for making dumplings.
  • I have made the filling by just mixing all the ingredients, if you want you can saute those ingredients on flame for 3-4 minutes. But there is no compulsion because we are using boiled chicken and we have steamed the momos so there will be no raw flavor of the chicken.
  • Cover the rolled circular sheets with wet cloth while making momos.
  • If you want, you can fry the same momos and make fry chicken momos.
  • You can serve these momos with green chilli sauce, pesto or basil leaf sauce, it also goes great with green mint chutney.
